12.1 Flashcards
CNS
Brain and spine
PNS
All her tissue outside of CNS
Comprising nerves and ganglia that facilitate communication from CNS to rest of body
Divided into sensory (afferent) and motor (efferent) divisions
Primary steps of nervous system
- Sensing change
- Processing information
- Issuing commands to effectors
Motor division of PNS
Transmits signals from CNS to effectors
Somatic motor division
Controls voluntary movements by sending signals to skeletal muscles
Automatic nervous system
-regulates involuntary functions
-divided into sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions
Sympathetic division
Fight or flight response
Parasympathetic division
Rest and digest activities
Slows heart rate and stimulates digestion functions
-maintaining homeostasis
Endocrine system
Communicates by means of chemical messengers (hormones) secreted into the blood
Nerve
Bundle of nerve fibers (axons) wrapped in fibrous connective tissue
Ganglion
Knot like swelling in a nerve where neuron cell bodies are concentrated
Located outside of CNS
