10.1 5 The effect of interactions betweem biotic and abiotic factors Flashcards
Density-independent factors impact
Same regardless of population size e.g extreme temperatures
Tend to limit distribution of individuals
Density-dependent factor
Impact will depend on how many organisms in a specific area e.g disease limit abundance of species
Competition
Individual organisms must compete for density-dependent factors
When does competition occur
When two organisms compete for a resource that is in limited supply
Intraspecific competition
Competition between members of the same species for a limited resource
As a result some individuals may not survive or reproduce
If resources are plentiful
Little or no competition
Number of individuals will increase until there is competition
Interspecific competition
When different species of the same community compete for the same resource
Reduce abundance of competing species
