define addiction
persistent, compulsive dependence on a behaviour or substance
what happens when we start using mood altering drugs and when we stop
fills body’s natural feel good neurotransmitter (endorphins) so nerve cells are fooled and shut down production of substance temporarily. When drug use is stopped receptor sites are emptied and we are left with an uncomfortable feeling that remains till neurotransmitter production resumes
define tolerance
phenomenon in which larger dose of drug or more intense involvement in an experience is needed for desired effects
explain withdrawal
drug or activity replaces an effect that the body normally created. Body adjust to even out effect making the drug a requirement to feel normal. Stopping the drug causes withdrawal symptoms usual the opposite effect of the drug.
ex. cocaine withdrawal makes people depressed and lethargic
