When should Syrup of Ipecac be given?
Use if ingestion occurred w/in 60 minutes. Obtain only with advise from poison control center (that means you should call them first)
When is Syrup of Ipecac contraindicated?
< 6 months old. Pt with CNS depression or seizure. Ingestion from strong acid, alkali or sharp object. Ingestion of petroleum distillate. Pt with compromised airway. Pt already vomiting post ingestion. Ingestion of agent with fast onset of action
What ingredients are found in Activated Charcoal?
Actidose and Sorbitol
When is Activated Charcoal most effective?
When poison ingested < 1 hour. Absorbs almost all drugs and chemicals, must mix powder with 8 oz of water
What types of medications/substances does Activated Charcoal not work again?
Most heavy metals, Lithium, Methanol, Arsenic, Cyanide, Strong acids or alkalis

Brand name of IV APAP
What is the PO antidote for APAP overdose?
N-acetylcysteine (Mucomyst)
What is the IV antidote for APAP overdose?
Acetadote
How is Mucomyst (N-acetylcysteine) dosed?
140mg/kg LD then 70mg/kg Q4h x17 doses (18 total doses)
How is Acetadote dosed?
150mg/kg infused over 60 min, then 50mg/kg infused over 4 hours, then 100mg/kg infused over 16 hours
What is the antidote for Anticholinergic overdose?
Phyostigmine salicylate (Antilirium)
What is the antidote for Benzodiazepine overdose?
Flumazenil (Romazicon)
How is Romazicon (Flumazenil) dosed?
0.3mg IV over 30 sec. Repeat 0.5mg over 30 sec at 1 min intervals if needed (Max cumulative dose: 5mg)
What is the antidote for CCB overdose?
Calcium salts or Glucagon. Lipid emulsion therapy
