A mixture of solids, liquids and gases that occur on the land surface, characterised by layers or ability to support rooted plants

What is the upper limit of the soil?
A
The boundary between soil and air, shallow water, live plants or plant materials that have not begun to decompose

Less well defined and separates soil from the weathered rock layer underneath
