What is migration?
a permanent/semi-permanent change of residence of an individual or group of people
What is forced migration?
the migrant has no choice but to migrate because of circumstances like war
What is international migration?
the movement of people across national frontiers for a minimum of 1 year
What is net-migration?
the difference between the numbers of in-migrants and out-migrants in an area
What is voluntary migration?
migrant makes decision to migrate
What is immigration?
action of coming to live permanently in a foreign country
What is emigration?
act of leaving the home country to live elsewhere
What is an asylum seeker?
person who has fled their country of origin and applies for asylum - given access to fair help/procedures
What is a refugee?
person who has fled armed conflict and recognised as needing of international protection
What is a economic migrant?
person who travels from one country to another in order to improve their standard of living
