political parties
main purpose is to win elections
the three parts of political parties
- party in the electorate (people in the party/voters)
- party as an organization (staff and budget)

3rd/minority parties
rarely win elections but they bring in new groups and ideas into politics
party DEallignment
the gradual disengage of people and politicians from the party(s)—> growth in independence.
coalition
the groups of people w a common interest that traditionally make up the party. dems-> african-americans
party realignment
shift in the coalitions that support the party. rust-belt states in 2016
new deal coalition
forged by democrats who dominated american politics from the 1930s to 1960s. it’s basic elements were the urban working class, ethnic groups, catholics and the poor.
closed primary
only registered members of a particular party can vote
open primary
any registered voter can vote (must vote for candidate of only one party)
blanket primary
each voter may vote for candidates from both parties.
