president requirements
- must be 35+ yo
- must be natural-born citizen
- must be a resident of the U.S. for 14+ years
president terms
- 2 terms 4 years each
- max 10 years
electoral college
delegates (2 senators + x# of reps) who represent the states (voters) and cast a vote to decide the pres and vice president of the U.S. 270 delegates is the magic # because it is the majority
succession
when a president is removed/ steps down etc. the lines of succession goes: pres> vice pres> speaker of the house> president pro tempore of the senate> sec of state and other cabinet members
impeachment
only bill clinton and andrew johnson were impeached
the political equivalent of an indictment in criminal law, prescribed by the constitution. the house of rep may impeach the president by a majority vote for “treason bribery or other high crimes and misdemeanors”
hours starts process and senate votes 2/3
chief diplomat (formal)
the role of president in recognizing foreign governments, making treaties and making executive agreements. acknowledge a foreign government as legitimae.
commander-in-chief (formal)
president is head of all of the military at all times
gulf of tonkin resolution
gave president lyndon johnson (lbj) a “blank check” for troop commitments in vietnam. congress gave their power to the president because they didn’t want to start war themselves.
war powers resolution
limits the president’s use of military.
-> pres. consult congress in 48 hours of commuting troops. can only commit troops for 60 days before extension is required. may be unconstitutional
crisis manager (informal)
a crisis is a sudden, unpredictable and potentially dangerous event—> ex: 9/11
technology changed this role with current technology, nuclear arsenal. the president can act much faster than congress to resolve a crisis
the vice president
brings balance to presidential ticket during election

the cabinet
closet presidential advisors: is made up of the top executives of the the federal departments (15) confirmed by senate
ex: sec of state, treasury etc.

legislative skills
president can veto a bill but congress can override that veto by 2/3 in both house and senate
mandates
when a president receives significant majority of votes (wins election) it is said he has a mandate from the people. it empowers and obligated them to pursue the promises they made during the campaign season
