demography
the study of the population and its changes. we care: possible majority-minority=the biggest group of people consists of less than 50%. the population is getting older.
census
the constitution says we must have a census although never says how often. done every 10 years in the US done to see population change and trend. helps redistrict congressional districts.
reapportionment
the redistribution of sears in the house done usually after the census.(435 members of the house- 1 member = 700,000 people/pop)
gerrymandering
when a congressional district is drawn to misrepresent the population. usually looks like a salamander. done to get more voters into more districts. unfair representation. state legislators redraw the lines.
regional shift
states gain/lose congressional representation because of changing population (increase or decrease of the population)
the greying of america
between 2010-2030 there will be about 75 million baby boomers meaning much of the population will be out of the work force and retired. social security is at rush here b/c it is running out of money due to high ratio of retirees to working class.
political socialization
when someone learns about politics by the people they are around with- family friends religion school mass media etc.
political ideology (scope of the government)
an individuals set of beliefs in what they believe the government should do in certain policies. this increase the scope of the government because there is more participation being done in regards to policy and voting.
random sampling
everyone has equal probability of being selected in this poll
sampling error
the level of confidence in the finding of a public opinon poll. the greater the # of people sampled the less error there is.
exit polls
used by the media to predict election day winner (samples 1/10 voters in the voting booth) ex: florida issue in 2000 election.
ideologues
the voting behavior in which an individual votes because of their party. connect their beliefs w/ broad position taken by their party/candidate. (ex: liberals=less military and more tax for social spending)
group benefit voter
people who vote for/support a party that caters to their group. (ex: republicans and small business owners.)
nature of the times voters
votes depending on whether the current time is good or bad for them. (2007 bad economy/recession)
no issue content voter
votes for candidate only because of their personality.
