Marbury v. Madison (1803)

A
-blue facts: 
william marbury justice of peace appointed by pres Adams but his commissions were not sent. new pres jefferson made james madison withholds marbury's commissions . marbury and the other men affected petitioned for the court to make madison give him his papers. 
-yellow constitutional issue:
 article 3 section 2
-pink resolution: 
exercising judicial review

plessy v. ferguson (1895)

A

-blue facts:
home plessy (1/8 african blood) paid for first-class on a train but he was told to go to the section for african-americans. he refused so he was arrested. he was found guilty for violating the general assembly of the state.
-yellow constitutional issue:
the 14th ammendment-states cannot deprive citizens of their rights
-pink resolution:
the court said that segregation in trains was okay and satisfied the 14th amendment as long as they were equal. “separate but equal”

brown v. board of education (1952)

A

blue facts:
the naacp got 13 parents and 20 children assembled. they wanted to enroll the kids in segregated white schools and were all denied. the topeka naacp filed the class action suit on their behalf and named it after one of the plaintiffs oliver brown.
-yellow constitutional issue:
the 14th ammendment
-pink resolution:
dismantled legal basis for racial segregation in schools and other public faculties,

baker v. carr (1960)

A

-blue facts:
charles baker is a republican in Tennessee. the tennesse constituion requires the legislative district to be redrawn ever 10 years but this hasn’t happened since 1901 (1960 is the case) tennesse argued that legislative districts were political not judicial questions.
-yellow constitutional issue:
the 5th ammendment- due process and equal protection of laws.
-pink resolution:
this case ALTERED the nature of political representation in america; requiring every state to redistrict during the 1960s often several times.

barron v. baltimore (1833)

A

-blue facts:
barron owned a baltimore harbor. he said the city diverted the flow of streams while engaging in city construction this made the water too shallow for vessels due to mounds of sand and dirt.
-yellow constitutional:
the 5th ammendment. the government takings of private property for public use needs compensation.
-pink resolution:
the supreme court had no jurisdiction in this case b/c the 5th amendment was not applicable to the states (this would later be changed)

buckley v. valeo (1975)

A

-blue facts:
after watergate, congress wanted to stop corruption in political campaigns so they put a law in that restricted financial contributions to candidates and set limits on the amount of money a person can contribute to a single campaign and they must report the contribution amount.
-yellow constitutional:
the 1st ammendment
-pink resolution:
restrictions on individual contributions did not violate the 1st amendment BUT restrictions on independent expenditures in campaigns DID violate the 1st ammendment.
