summary: gideon had felony for breaking and entering. he lacked money and couldn’t get lawyer. the court refused to give him an attorney so he had to defend himself.
constitutional: sixth and fourteenth amendment
resolution: the court said gideon had the right to have a attorney. due process.
gitlow v new york
summary: gitlow was arrested for distributing copies of his manifesto papers and was convicted under a state criminal anarchy law.
constitutional issue: 1st and 14th amendment.
resolution: the first amendment applies to the states but the states can say that an entire class of speech is dangerous so it can be prohibited.
griswold v CT
summary: Griswold was convicted for consulting etc to a married person for purposes of preventing conception.
amendment: 9th and 14th amendment
resolution: the right to privacy and marital relations.
gratz v bollinger
summary: Jennifer Gratz and Patrick was not admitted to University of Michigan because of her race.
amendment: Equal protection clause in 14th amendment
resolution: the court said michigan violated the 14th amendment.

Barbra (white) was denied admission because Michigan Uni wanted diversity.
