A

by pain of the lumbar region and may involve either the spine, or one side or both side of the lumbar region. Lumbago is closely related to the kidneys, as they are located in the lumbar region.

Lumbago due to cold-damp

A

a. Manifestations: pain with cold and heavy sensations in the lumbar region, limited movement, not relieved by lying down, aggravated in cloudy & rainy days; relieved by warmth
b. T: white greasy coating
c. P: deep slow or deep moderate pulse.
d. Treatment principle: expel cold & eliminate damp, warm up meridian to open the collaterals
e. Acupoint selection: BL23, BL40, DU3; BL25, BL26, SP9

A

a. Manifestations: Distending pain in the lumbar region with heavy or hot sensation, radiate to hip joints, aggravated in rainy days or summer heat
b. T: yellow greasy coating
c. P: soggy and rapid pulse
d. Treatment principle: clear heat to remove dampness, relax sinews to relieve pain
e. Acupoint selection: BL23, DU3, BL40; BL25, BL32; GB34, SP6 & Ashi

A

a. Manifestations: Stabbing lumbar pain (often caused by sprain), fixed in certain area and aggravated by pressure; a limitation of movement (inability of bending & extending or turning round body), mild pain in the day and worse at night
b. T: purplish tongue or normal tongue with purple dots
c. P: deep and choppy pulse or wiry pulse.
d. Treatment principle: activate blood to remove blood stasis, dredge the collaterals to relieve the pain
e. Acupoint selection: BL23, BL40, Ashi; SP10, BL17; DU26, Yaotong, LI10

Lumbago due to kidney deficiency

A

a. Manifestations: Weakness, soreness and pain in the lumbar region, which may be relieved by pressure & kneading; weakness of knee and leg, aggravated by overwork or fatigue, relieve by rest. Recurrent pain, usually with a chronic onset.
b. Treatment principle: tonify kidney
c. Acupoint selection: BL23, KI3, BL40, (BL32); Yang deficiency add DU4, REN4, Yaoyan; Yin deficiency add BL52, SP6
