give a general description of dysmenorrhea
Periodic pain in the lower abdomen and lumbar region before, during or after menstruation, usually accompanied by other symptoms such as pale complexion, profuse cold sweat, nausea and vomiting etc.
differentiation of dysmenorrhea
- cold and dampness obstruction
- liver qi stagnation
- deficiency of qi and blood
- deficiency of liver and kidney
Cold and dampness obstruction
a. Manifestations: Cold pain occurs in the lower abdomen before or during menstruation, pain is aggravated when pressure is applied, and alleviated when heat is applied,
b. T: thin white coat,
c. P: deep and tight
d. Treatment principle: Disperse cold and dampness, induce menstruation to relieve pain
e. Acupoint selection: REN3, SP8, ST28
Liver qi stagnation
a. Manifestations: Distending pain in the lower abdomen before or during menstruation obstructed menstrual flow,
b. T: thin white coat
c. P: deep and wiry
d. Treatment Principle: Disperse stagnated liver qi and promote menstrual flow
e. Points Selection: REN6, LR3, SP6
Deficiency of qi and blood
a. Manifestations: Dull pain in the lower abdomen during or after menstruation, emptiness and a bearing-down sensation in the lower abdomen, better with pressure
i. T: pale
ii. P: thin and weak
iii. Treatment Principle: tonify qi and blood, regulate menstruation and relieve the pain
iv. Points Selection: REN4, ST36, SP6, BL17, BL18, BL20
Deficiency of liver and kidney
Manifestations: Dull pain in the lower abdomen during or after menstruation, alleviated by pressure, T: pale, P: deep and thin
Treatment Principle: tonify the liver and kidney, regulating and reinforcing the Chong and Ren meridians
