general description of wind stroke ( zhong feng)

A

Wind stroke is chiefly manifested by sudden onset with deviated mouth, a rigid tongue, slurred speech, hemiplegia, and even loss of consciousness. Because of its sudden onset, emergency with various symptoms and wandering and changing nature of the wind, it is called wind stroke, or sudden attack (Cu Zhong). Wind stroke can be classified as either an attack on the Zangfu organs or an attack on the meridians, depending on the location of the disease and the degree of severity

Attack on the meridians and collaterals

A

a. Manifestations: Hemiplegia, numbness of the limbs, deviation of the mouth, slurred speech; headache, dizziness, vertigo; tinnitus, insomnia

T: white or greasy coating
P: slippery and wiry or thready pulse.

Treatment principle: Dredge the meridians and collaterals, regulate qi and blood

Acupoint selection:

  • Hemiplegia: LI15, LI11, LI10, LI4, GB30, GB34, ST36, ST41, BL62
  • Deviation of the mouth: ST4, ST6, LI4, ST44, GB14, LR3, BL2

Attack on the zang-fu organs: Tense syndrome

A

Manifestations: Falling down in a fit (with loss of consciousness), deviation of mouth, hemiplegia, trismus and clenched fist, retention of urine, constipation; flushed face, rough breathing, a rattling sound in the throat due to sputum

T: red tongue with thick yellow coating
P: wiry, slippery and rapid pulse

Treatment principle: Open the orifice and induce resuscitation, eliminate phlegm, clea heat.

Acupoint selection: DU26, PC8, LR3, ST40, twelve Jing points.

Attack on the zang-fu organs :Collapse syndrome

A

Manifestations: Falling down in a fit with loss of consciousness, mouth open and eyes closed, snoring but weak breath, relaxed hand, incontinence of urine; cold limbs, profuse cold sweat, flushed face

T: pale or purple dark tongue
P: thready and weak or floating, large without root.

Treatment principle: Recuperate depleted yang, restore collapse.

Acupoint selection: REN4, REN8
