Wound Healing Flashcards
What wounds do we treat via Direct Suturing?
Clean incised wounds less than 6 hours post injury
What wounds do we treat via wound excision?
Lacerated and contaminated wounds
What wounds do we treat via Wound Debridement?
Infected wounds, or those greater than 24 hours in duration
How long doss the phase of inflammation last ?
5-11 days
Explain phase of proliferation
Lasts 3 weeks, consists of fibroblastic proliferation and collagen deposition
Explain the phase of remodeling
Lasts 3 weeks-6months, consists of collagen and CT deposition, the most effective phase for wound healing.
Explain healing by primary intention
Occurs in sutured clean wounds, leaves no disfigurement
Explain healing by secondary intention
Occurs in infected and gaping wounds. The open wounds is allowed to close naturally
Explain healing by tertiary intention?
Occurs in heavily contaminated wounds. Deeper structures are closed while the skin is left open, then closed once clean.
What is Wound dehiscence?
When the wound closure fails and it re-opens
How is keloid formation a failure of wound healing?
Leaves excessive scar tissue. Occurs in exaggerated inflammatory process.
