Worship Flashcards
What is liturgical worship?
This is public worship in a church that uses a service book with set prayers. The Bible readings are set out in a lectionary in a 3 year cycle. Main form of worship in Catholic churches.
What is non-liturgical worship?
This is public worship without set prayers or rituals. The leader is free to choose the hymns and prayers. Music is a major part of non-liturgical worship. Prayers are extempore- said without preparation.
What is informal worship?
Worshipping God at home by saying Grace. Churches also have this for example ‘Messy Church’.
What is private worship?
Worshipping God alone, giving them the opportunity to talk to God.
Why are different types of worship used?
- Worship at home: brings the family together.
- Private worship: express emotion they cannot express in front of others.
- Informal worship: Helps people to see God in the ordinary, makes them realising worship can happen anyway.
- Public worship: Gives a sense of solidarity and a chance to make friends in the faith.
Why do Catholics believe that liturgical worship is the best?
- Set prayers help them to worship God in a familiar way, making worship a part of their lives.
- Using ancient prayers, making them aware of their heritage.
- Using the same prayers as others creates solidarity.
- Following the liturgical year, makes them learn more about God.
Why do Protestants prefer non-liturgical worship?
1, A more free form of worship helps people participate in worship.
2. It helps to connect worship to the world of today.
3. It allows worship to include forms people identify with.
