The Last Days of Jesus Life Flashcards
What is the ascension?
The return of Christ to heaven
What happened during the Last Supper?
The night before he was crucified, Jesus shared a meal with his disciples and prophesied that one of his disciples would betray him. He shared bread and wine with them saying that the bread was his body, and the wine was his blood, establishing the Eucharist.
How did Jesus get arrested?
When they woke up Judas, one of his disciples, arrived with the priest to arrest him. The disciples tried to fight but he would not let them.
What happened during Jesus’ trial?
Jesus was tried by Sanhedrin and was found guilty of blasphemy. He was then taken to trial by Pontius Pilate, who couldn’t find him guilty of anything and offered to release Jesus or Barabbas. The crowd chose Barabbas to free.
What happened when Jesus was crucified?
Jesus was crucified on Friday. Jesus was mocked by the bystanders. When he died, he forgave his killers and died saying “Father into your hands I commit my spirit”
What happened when Jesus was resurrected?
Joseph of Arimathea got permission to bury Jesus in his tomb. Jesus’ women followers came to anoint the body, but they found the tomb to be empty. Jesus appeared to two disciples at a village near Jerusalem
What happened during the ascension?
Jesus appeared for 40 days then he told his remaining disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the gift of the Holy Spirit and Jesus was taken away in a cloud.
What are the different records of the last days of Jesus?
- John does not mention bread and wine at the Last Supper but does record Jesus washing his disciples’ feet.
- Mark, Matthew and John record resurrection appearances in Galilee.
- Matthew says Pilate put guards on the tombs, but they were frightened away when an earthquake rolled the stone from the tomb’s entrance.
Why are these events important?
- The Last Supper is the basis of the Eucharist, the most important form of Christian worship.
- Christians believe the crucifixion brought forgiveness from sin.
- The resurrection assures Christians that there is life after death.
- The ascension assures Christians that Jesus is no longer restricted by a body and can be with them anywhere.
