What is a covenant?

An agreement between God and his people. God gave his laws on 2 tablets of stone that should be kept in the Ark of the Covenant in the tabernacle.

Why is the Mosaic Covenant important?

1. It became the very basis of Judaism. Moses was given the 613 mitzvot.
2. Jewish people have a duty to keep their side of the covenant to become God’s people.
3. By keeping it the will fulfil their destiny of bringing the whole world to worship God.
4. The laws are important for modern Jews that divisions are based on interpretations of the law

What was Moses’ role ?

He met the shekhinah on Mount Sinai and received the law directly from God. God made the covenant with Moses and delivered it to the Jewish people and explained it to themselves

Why is the first commandment so important?

“Thou shalt have no other Gods”
1. Touch the mezuzah when they go in and out to remind them of one God.
2. Pray x3 times and males wear the tefillin with the shema
3. Say grace to one God

1. Prohibits Jews from having statues
