A

Working while children are Present

A

Drivers must be extremely careful when working around children

Whenever children present:
-Scan area and account for their movements
-Immediately stop truck by setting the parking brake and exiting when in doubt of a child’s location..
-Inspect area around and under the truck and do not move until there has been verification that the area is clear
Never allow children to play in, on, or around the immediate area of the truck

A

Drivers/Helpers must maintain three points of contact
Must make contact with the truck by using either:
-Both feet and one hand

  • Do not dismount if traffic is present
  • Always open the cab door completely
  • Never jump off the truck

A
  • Obtain a secure grip on the grab handle
  • Firmly step and shift the body weight evenly
  • Look for loose objects and slippery substances on surfaces:
  • -Rocks, waste, oils, grease, water
  • -uneven ground

A

Climbing on top of trucks

A

Should avoid climbing on top of the trucks if possible.
To climb on top of the truck, always:
-Safely secure the truck
-Face the equipment
-Use three points of contact
-Use the hand holds and steps provided
While on the ladder:
-Avoid far reaches
Stay as close to the center as possible when on top of a truck
-Do not slide down the ladder or jump off the equipment
The windshield guard is NOT a ladder

A

When walking on a working surface:

  • Use hand holds if available
  • Adjust the pace and actions according to:
  • -weather
  • -time of day
  • -inclines

Heat/Cold Stress

A

Driver must monitor himself/herself and the helper throughout the day for symptoms of heat/cold stress
A driver must notify Dispatch if heat/cold stress symptoms are seen
A manager MUST make drivers and helpers aware of any adverse weather conditions before starting their shift

Emergency Flashers and strobe lights

A

Driver must turn on emergency flashers and warning strobe lights when the truck is:

  • traveling significantly slower than the posted speed limit
  • blocking or partially blocking a lane of traffic
  • collecting trash during residential and rear load commercial operations
  • broken down while on the side of the road

Prepare the truck for Travel

A

Drivers must ensure the forks and arms are in the proper travel positions according to truck specifications while:

Rule 5.8 (LCR)

Zigzagging

A

Can be:

  • Parking or operating a truck across lanes of traffic in the opposite direction (towards oncoming traffic) to service a customer
  • Constant back-and-forth movement across lanes of traffic to service a customer
  • Single event movement across lanes of traffic to service a customer

Rule 5.9 (LCR)

Double Siding

A

Double siding is strictly prohibited unless it is approved by the District Manager
A case by case exemption to this can be made upon written request
NOT ALL INCLUSIVE

Exemptions are based off of minimum criteria:

A
  • Only on two-lane roads with posted speed of 30 mph or less and no double yellow lines are present
  • Can only be performed between 1 hr after sunrise and 1 hr before
  • Not allowed within 200 ft of areas of restricted visibility, curves or obstructions that block Drivers/Helpers clear view of travel in both directions
  • Must not be prohibited by state/provincial law
  • May not be conducted during reduced visibility situations: dense fog, heavy rain, or snowfall
  • The collection vehicle must be equipped with both front and rear dual oscillating strobe lights

Rule 5.10

Unauthorized Waste

A

Not allowed to pick up because it may create environmental and/or employee safety concerns if it is handled wrong
IF a driver observers unauthorized waste, they must:
-tag the material indicating the reason for leaving the material
-Notify dispatch (HOC)

IF hazardous materials are noticed:

A

Like smells, smoke, dusts/powders, unusual leaking liquids, etc., a driver must:

  • stop the truck
  • move all personnel up wind to fresh air
  • notify dispatch of the situation
  • wait for further instructions

Rule 5.11

Before Driving to the Disposal Site

A

Drivers responsibility to ensure the truck is ready for travel. To do this, a driver must:

  • Check the tires before going to the disposal location
  • Secure the load and check for any loose debris
