Section 5 focuses on:
Safety while working on and around the truck, safe truck operations on the route
Rule 5.1
Driver/Helper Awareness
Drivers/Helpers are prohibited from wearing headsets or other devices that may impair their ability to hear traffic or other potential hazards while driving/working on the route
Rule 5.1.1
Working while children are Present
Drivers must be extremely careful when working around children
Whenever children present:
-Scan area and account for their movements
-Immediately stop truck by setting the parking brake and exiting when in doubt of a child’s location..
-Inspect area around and under the truck and do not move until there has been verification that the area is clear
Never allow children to play in, on, or around the immediate area of the truck
Rule 5.15
Helpful/Curious Customers
Do not allow people near the truck or container
Do not allow people to help load any material into the truck or container while servicing

Driver Awareness While servicing Customers
During the approach to the container:
-While servicing the container (Underneath or near)
-Waiting to service a container
STOP truck operations if the area is not clear of pedestrians or vehicles
Rule 5.3
Three Points of Contact
Drivers/Helpers must maintain three points of contact
Must make contact with the truck by using either:
-Both feet and one hand
-Both hands and one foot
ALWAYS face truck when mounting/dismounting and NEVER JUMP OFF
Rule 5.4
Getting in/Out and on/Off of the Truck
Always keep steps free of debris
BEFORE dismounting the truck:
- Wait for the truck to come to a complete stop
- Look both ways
- Do not dismount if traffic is present
- Always open the cab door completely
- Never jump off the truck
While Dismounting:
- Obtain a secure grip on the grab handle
- Firmly step and shift the body weight evenly
- Look for loose objects and slippery substances on surfaces:
- -Rocks, waste, oils, grease, water
- -uneven ground
While mounting the truck:
-Truck must be stopped and not moving
-Look both ways
-Always open the cab door completely
HELPERS:
-Before putting the truck in motion, the driver must wait for the helpers to get onto the rear riding step or be completely inside the cab
Rule 5.5
Climbing on top of trucks
Should avoid climbing on top of the trucks if possible.
To climb on top of the truck, always:
-Safely secure the truck
-Face the equipment
-Use three points of contact
-Use the hand holds and steps provided
While on the ladder:
-Avoid far reaches
Stay as close to the center as possible when on top of a truck
-Do not slide down the ladder or jump off the equipment
The windshield guard is NOT a ladder
Rule 5.6
Walking Working Surfaces
When walking on a working surface:
- Use hand holds if available
- Adjust the pace and actions according to:
- -weather
- -time of day
- -inclines
- Scan the area for:
- -tripping hazards
- -uneven surfaces
- -moving hazards
Rule 5.13
Reaching into Container
Avoid reaching inside containers if the material does not easily come out
If the material does not come out of the container easily:
-Tag the container
-Contact dispatch (HOC)
-Leave the container full
Rule 5.12
Heat/Cold Stress
Driver must monitor himself/herself and the helper throughout the day for symptoms of heat/cold stress
A driver must notify Dispatch if heat/cold stress symptoms are seen
A manager MUST make drivers and helpers aware of any adverse weather conditions before starting their shift
Rule 5.2
Emergency Flashers and strobe lights
Driver must turn on emergency flashers and warning strobe lights when the truck is:
- traveling significantly slower than the posted speed limit
- blocking or partially blocking a lane of traffic
- collecting trash during residential and rear load commercial operations
- broken down while on the side of the road
