Container Placement

A

Driver must always evaluate the container location for hazards. They may include:
-Overhead wires
-parked cars
-Pedestrians
If a container represents a safety risk, immediately report the situation to dispatch (HOC)

Rule 6.1

Overweight Containers

A

Driver/Helper should always check the weight of the container before lifting it to avoid straining his/her back
Need to lift the container in one continuous, steady motion without jerking
If this cannot be accomplished:
-get help from another employee
-lighten the load
If it cannot be serviced safely, a driver should immediately report the situation to dispatch (HOC) and give the customers address.

Rule 6.2

Overloaded Containers

A
If a container is overloaded, the driver/helper should try to safely remove objects (such as lumber, wire, or fencing)
Watch out for:
-jagged and sharp container edges
-nails in lumber
-thorns in brush
-used syringes or sharps

Rule 6.3

Safe Lifting Technique

A

Drivers must keep these safety practices in mind every time they lift a bag or container
ALWAYS:
-Keep the weight of the container close to the body
-Keep a safe distance between bags or uncontained waste and the body
-Get another employee to help lift awkward, heavy, or unique loads (ex. furniture, appliances, etc)
NEVER:
-Twist the back when lifting; instead, turn the legs

A

Hand trucks should be inspected before being used, and any defects that may cause an incident should be reported to a manager

Rule 6.6

Moving Containers with casters

A

To reduce strain on the body, containers with casters should be pushed whenever possible.
To move caster container safely:
-Avoid twisting the back to reduce injury
-Do not try to stop a container that gets away on an incline
-Report any containers that are difficult to move to management
A Driver or helper should report any broken or bent casters
