Section 9 focuses on:
Housekeeping and washing, Fueling, Documentation
End of Shift
A driver/helper job does not stop once they get back to the yard. There are several things that must be accomplished once they are back from the route, including housekeeping and documentation
Rule 9.1
Housekeeping
Driver/helpers must keep the inside and outside of the truck clean. This is done for safety reasons, such as potential interference with the accelerator from garbage on the floor and for the image of our workers and Company
Rule 9.2
Truck Washing
Truck washing can only occur in designated areas. These areas have been selected so that the runoff does not contribute to storm water pollution
Every facility has a storm water pollution plan which every manager should become familiar with
Rule 9.3
Fueling
Whenever an employee is around fueling sources, they must be extremely careful. Drivers cannot multitask and take their focus off of the fueling procedure.
The rules for fueling are:
-Control ignition sources
–Do not smoke within 50ft or the fueling area
-Shut down vehicle prior to fueling
Stay at the fuel pump the entire time the vehicle is being fueled and hold the handle on the fuel nozzle.
-Do not wedge objects in the handle to dispense fuel
-Do not perform post-trip inspection while fueling
Rule 9.4
Hazard Communication/WHMIS
Drivers and helpers must be familiar with the chemical and physical hazards that are involved with the fluids that they are working around, like fuel.
Drivers and helpers are directed to ask questions about the hazards of these materials to a route manager.
HAZCOM/WHMIS Program contains:
The written program
A chemical inventory list
A copy of each material safety data sheet (MSDS) for each chemical on the list or information on how to obtain the MSDS.
Rule 9.5
Parking
A driver must park the vehicle in the designated parking area.
To park the truck properly:
-Set the parking brake
-Turn off the battery disconnect
Rule 9.6
Drivers Daily Vehicle Inspection Report (Post-Trip)
At the end of a shift, Drivers have to perform another inspection called a post-trip inspection. The driver must complete a legible WM Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR)
Rule 9.7
Complete Driver’s Log
Drivers must complete a Drivers Log. The driver must follow all state, federal, and provincial laws. All managers must be familiar with these laws.
All WM Drivers falling under DOT/MOT regulations must complete a drivers log recording their HOS unless they fall under an exemption
