Working memory model Flashcards
1
Q
Define and describe the capacity and coding in the Central executive
A
- attentional process monitors incoming data decides what needs to be done and when delegates tasks accordingly, takes over most demanding task
- capacity - limited storage Coding - any type of info
2
Q
Define and describe the capacity and coding in the phonological loop
A
- info passed from CE to PL
- Phono store: stores words we hear, inner ear
- Articulatory loop: silently repeats/rehearses words that are seen or heard
- Coding = acoustically Capacity = limited
3
Q
Define and describe the capacity and coding in the Visuo-spatial sketchpad
A
- info passed from CE to VSS
- responsible for setting up mental images like giving directions, temporarily stores visual and spatial info
- logie:
1) Visual cache = stores visual data
2) inner scribe = records arrangement of objects in the visual field
Capacity = limited 3-4 Codes = visually
4
Q
Define and describe the capacity and coding in the episodic buffer
A
- EB collects combines info from CE,PL+VSS to record an event, EB transfers info to the LTM and is used to retrieve info from LTM to the STM
Capacity = Limited 4 chunks Coding = any info
5
Q
AO3 for WMM
A
RTS shallice & warrington on KF
- Had amnesia, digit recall poor when read loud, good when read himself
- supports WMM suggests diff stores within STM one for visual (VSS) one for auditory (PL)
- As PL damaged but VSS intact
Dual task perf supports notion of separate components within STM
- EG baddeley found difficult performing two visual task at same time
- when using pointer track light and imagining F than visual with verbal
- Supports WMM bc visual tasks competing for limited capacity of same slave system
- Therefore credibility of WMM increased
no clarity over CE
- said to be single component of attention that delegates to slave systems
- psychologists suggest CE may have several components within it
- Therefore cast doubt on WMM as expl of STM
