Q

what is procedural memory

A
  • part of LTM that’s responsible for knowing how to do things i.e memory of motor skills , such as riding a bike
  • non declarative as do not involve conscious recall
  • the area responsible is the cerebellum and motor cortex

Q

what is semantic memory

A
  • part of LTM responsible for storing knowledge about the world. i.e knowledge about the meaning of words, such as “love” , as well as general knowledge like facts . i.e London is the capital of England
  • declarative as involve conscious recall
  • not time stamped as we usually don’t remember when and where we first learned/coded info
  • temporal lobe

Q

what is episodic memory

A
  • part of LTM responsible for storing info about events that we have experienced in our lives at specific time , for example first day at school
  • declarative as involve conscious recall
  • time stamped -remember when and where we coded these memories
  • hippocampus

Q

AO3 for types of LTM

A

RTS Clive wearing

  • case study of clive wearing
  • suffers from amnesia episodic memory was damaged couldn’t remember events from past ,eg his music education
  • procedural memory still working as can play piano.
  • supports idea of diff type of LTM bc only certain parts were damaged ,indicating that they was separate

RTS praised as it uses scientific methods

  • objective and empirical techniques such as brain scans, used to identify diff parts of brain that become more active when completing diff types of LTM tasks
  • eg the cerebellum and motor cortex being active while carrying a procedural task.
  • argues to inc overall internal val of research into LTM ,thus raising psych status

strenghth- neuroimaging evidence to support notion of diff type of LTM

  • ppt asked to perform various memory tasks whilst brain was scanned using PET scanner
  • found episodic was linked w hippocampus ,whereas procedural memory linked w cerebellum and motor cortex
  • therefoere supports LTM bc 3 difff types of LTM was found in diff area of brain ,indicating they are separate
