  • standards of behaviour set by social group
  • behaviours could be implicit, explicit
  • deviations from behaviours considered abnormal

eg. like with old some individuals may refuse to use cutlery at restaurants choosing instead to use own in fear of contamination, would break rules of expected behaviour and would be seen as abnormal

  • unable to cope with demands of everyday life
  • looks at abnormal behaviour that interferes with everyday life.
  • e.g maintain basic hygiene
  • rosenhan and seligman : maladaptive behaviour irrational behaviour ,that is dangerous to oneself and/or others, severe personal distress
  • eg. someone w depression might not be able to keep they job

  • Self actualisation - the extent to which an individual works to their capabilities and reaches their full potential.
  • Resistance to stress (integration) – being resistant to stress.

  • Reality- having an accurate perception of reality/the world.
  • Mastery of environment- ability to love, function at work

weakness:

  • created within a culture, limited by cult relativism
  • diff cultures have diff SN
  • EG: western, messages from spirits = Sz, non-western seen as a gift
  • not approp use DSN outside of spec cultr

Strength:

  • differentiates between des+undes behaviour within culture
  • unlike stat infreq suggest if behaviour rare then abnormal, even if desirable (high IQ)
  • Therefore DSN more appropriate

Strength:

  • measure when to seek prof help
  • “mind” 48% ppl experience mental health issue
  • if noticed treatment available
  • FFA used as measure can receive early intervention for their mental health

Weakness :

  • easy t label non-stand lifestyle as abnormal
  • hard to say when someone is FFA
  • EG: high risk activity or spiritual practice could be classed as irrational or danger to self
  • Therefore it is limitation of FFA ppl who make unusual choices classed as abnormal

  • focuses on characteristics that make up norm beh that distinguish mental health from abnormality, rather than characteristics that makes individual abnormal
  • more +approach reduce stigma that can surround MH more likely to seek advice

  • not realistic to meet all 6
  • EG: lost job unable to cope
  • Therefore limiting DFIMH

  • not differentiate between des+undes beh when defining abnormality
  • EG: High IQ des wouldnt consider undes however is stat rare so abnormal
  • limitation to stat inf
