Coughing or wheezing with thick sputum due to turbid clogging of the lungs
What is the 2nd function of Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix)?
Disperses & scatters wind-heat
What are the indications for the use of Qian Hu to disperse and scatter wind-heat?
Externally contracted wind-heat with headache and cough. Most suitable when wind-heat constrains the lungs.
What is the 1st function of Zhi Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum)?
Dries damp, transforms phlegm, and causes rebellious Qi to descend
What are the indications for use of Zhi Ban Xia to dry damp, transform phlegm and cause rebellious qi to descend?
Cough with copious sputum, as in cold phlegm in lungs. Especially effective for transforming phlegm due to damp of spleen.
What is the 2nd function of Zhi Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum)?
Directs Rebellious Qi downward and stops vomiting
What are the indications for the use of Zhi Ban Xia to direct rebellious qi downward and stop vomiting?
Nausea and vomiting due to many causes: cold, thin mucus, stomach deficiency, stomach heat or pregnancy

Dissipates nodules & reduces clumps
What are the indications for use of Zhi Ban Xia to dissipate nodules and reduce clumps?
- Nodules, pressure, distention, pain due to phlegm in chest
- Phlegm nodules in neck (such as goiter & scrofula)
- Obstruction caused by phlegm anywhere in body
What is a the 4th/additional function of Zhi Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum)?
Focal distention in the chest & epigastrium

Stops cough & calms wheezing
What are the indications for use of Xing Ren to stop cough and calm wheezing?
- Cough caused by hot and/or cold
- Especially useful for externally-contracted dry cough (bc the herb is moist in nature)
What is the 2nd function of Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen)?
Moistens the intestines & unblocks the bowels (due to high oil content) (note: herb must be crushed in preparation)
What is the first function of Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus)?
Reduces food stagnation & transforms accumulation
