Whole Numbers Flashcards
What is the place value of a digit?
It is where the digit is in the number, and that therefore tells you whether it is in hundreds, thousands, millions etc.
What are commas used for?
They are used before every three digits to make the number easier to read.
When comparing the size of numbers, which column do you check first and then which is the next column you check?
You check the largest column first. Then you work from left to right.
What do , =, ≤ and ≥ mean?
Less than, greater than, equal to, less than or equal to and greater than or equal to.
In column addition and subtraction, which column to you start from?
The rightmost column.
If the sum of one column is greater than 9, what do you do with the extra digit?
You carry the extra digit over to the next column and you include that digit in the next sum.
If a subtraction creates a negative number, what do you do?
You borrow a ten from the next column to complete the subtraction. The column you borrow from decreases by one.
How is the column method for multiplication different to the column method for addition?
You multiply every single digit by every other digit.
If both numbers have more than one digit, how do you do column multiplication?
You deal with each digit separately, and then add together the answers, respecting their place value by putting zeros in the right place.
How do you do short division?
You start with the digit on the left, divide it by the divisor and then put the remainder before the next digit. You then continue this process.
What is the order of operations?
Brackets, Indices, Divide and Multiply, Add and Subtract. For addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, you work from left to right.
What are negative numbers?
Numbers that are less than zero.
How do you add and subtract negative numbers?
+ -number = -
- +number = -
+ +number = +
- -number = +
How do you multiply and divide by negative numbers?
+ x - = - + / - = -
- x + = - - / + = -
+ x + = + + / + = +
- x - = + - / - = +
