Multiples and Factors Flashcards
What is a Multiple?
A multiple of a number is a number that is in that number’s times table.
What is a Factor?
An integer that will divide exactly into another number.
What is a factor pair?
Two integers that multiply together to make the desired number.
What is a Prime Number?
A number with two factors, one and itself.
What is a Square Number?
A square number is the answer when an integer is multiplied by itself.
What is a Cube Number?
A cube number is the answer when an integer is multiplied by itself and then again by itself.
What are Powers?
A way to write how many times a number has been multiplied by itself.
What are Roots?
Roots are the opposite of powers. A square root undoes a square etc.
How can you estimate powers and roots?
You can use know powers and roots, and use them to find the area where the answer has to be in.
What is a prime factor?
Prime factors are factors of a number that are prime numbers. Therefore, they cannot be factorised any further. Every number can be broken down to prime factors.
What is a highest common factor?
A common factor is a factor that two or more numbers share, and the highest common factor is simply the largest one.
What is a lowest common multiple?
A common multiple is a number that is a shared multiple of two or more numbers. The lowest common multiple is simply the smallest one.
How can you use prime factor to find the highest common factor and lowest common multiple?
The highest common factor is simply the product of all of the common prime factors. To find the lowest common multiple, multiply the HCF by all of the unused prime factors.
How can you use Venn diagrams to find the HCF and LCM?
If the prime factors of one number is set A and the other is set B, then the HCF is A ⋂ B and the LCM is A ⋃ B.
