3-dimensional Shapes Flashcards
What is a 3-dimensional shape?
A shape with a length, width and height.
What is a face, edge and vertex?
A face is a flat surface, an edge is where two faces meet and a vertex is where edges meet.
What is a prism?
A 3-dimensional shape with a uniform cross section (base).
What is pyramid?
A 3-dimensional shape with a polygon at its base and other triangular faces that meet at a single vertex.
How do you work out the volume of a cuboid?
You multiply the length by the width by the height.
What is surface area?
The total area of all of the faces.
How do you find the volume of a prism?
You find the area of the cross-section and then multiply that by the height.
What is a cylinder?
A prism like shape with a circular cross-section.
How do you find the volume of a pyramid?
You multiply the base by the perpendicular height and then divide it by 3.
How do you find the surface area of a cone?
You add the area of the circle to the product of the slanted height and the radius.
How do you find the volume of a sphere?
You cube the radius and multiply it by 4π. Then, you divide it by 3.
How do you find the surface area of a sphere?
You square the radius and multiply it by 4π.
What is a plan?
A scale drawing of a 3D shape when looked at from above.
What types of elevation can be drawn?
Front elevation and side elevation.
