Other Graphs Flashcards
What is a quadratic graph and how is it shaped?
It is any graph with the form y = a(x^2) + bx + c where a is not 0. All quadratic graphs have a line of symmetry. When a > 0 then the graph is u shaped and when a < 0 then the graph is n shaped.
What is a cubic graph?
Any graph of the form y = a(x^3) + b(x^2) + cx + d.
What is a reciprocal graph?
A graph of the form y = 1/x which looks like two curves on a graph.
What is an exponential graph?
A graph of the form y = c^x. They increase rapidly and never go below the x axis.
What is the equation of a circle?
An equation of x^2 + y^2 = r^2 makes a circle around the origin where r is the radius. This is because any point on the circle can be connected to the origin by pythagoras’s theorem.
How do you find the equation for the tangent of a circle at point P.
The tangent will have a form of ax + b, so you have to find a and b. a is the gradient of the line. Using the coordinates for P, we can tell the slope of the radius and therefore the slope of the tangent. We can then rearrange the y = ax + b formula to find c.
