Solving Simultaneous Equations Flashcards
What are simultaneous equations?
More than one equation with more than one unknown variable.
How do you solve them by elimination?
If one of the unknown variables has the same coefficient in both equations, you can add or subtract the equations to eliminate a variable.
How do you solve them by substitution?
If there are no common coefficients, you can rearrange one of the equations, so it gives an expression for one of the variables. Then, you substitute this expression into the other equation and solve it.
How do you solve equations where one is quadratic and the other is linear?
You factorise the quadratic equation.
How do you solve them using graphs?
If you draw lines for each of the equations, the solutions will be the x and y coordinates for the point where the lines cross.
