Transformations Flashcards
What is a Reflection?
A reflection through a line means that every point in the reflected shape is the same distance from the mirror line as the original shape and that the two equivalent shapes can be joined by lines at right angles to the mirror line.
How do you describe a reflection?
You give the equation for the mirror line.
What is a Rotation?
It means rotating a shape around a fixed point of rotation. If you draw a line from the point of a shape to the point of rotation and then draw a line from the rotated point of a shape, to the point of rotation, the angle should be the angle of rotation and the lines should be equal.
How do you describe a rotation?
You state the point of rotation, the angle and the direction of rotation.
What is a Translation?
A translation moves a shape up, down, left or right, but it does not change the appearance of the shape.
How do you describe a translation?
You use column vector notation (x y) where x is the distance on the x axis and y is the distance on the y axis.
What is an Enlargement?
It means drawing straight lines from each of the original shape’s corners to the point of enlargement. You then multiply the lengths of these lines by the scale factor and draw a new shape at the new positions of the lines.
How do you describe an Enlargement?
You state the point of enlargement and the scale factor.
What does congruent mean?
It means that two shapes are the same size and shape (have the same length sides and angles).
What does similar mean?
It means that two shapes are the same shape (have the same angles).
If a shape is expanded by a scale factor x, what will its area and volume have expanded by?
The area will have expanded by a scale factor x^2 and the volume will have expanded by a scale factor x^3.
