Wet Lab 3 - Ligaments Of The Pelvis Flashcards
What are ligaments?
They are collagenous ropes or ties that connect one bone to another across a joint. They tie one bone to another, binding them together.
What is the origin of the posterior (dorsal) interosseous sacroiliac ligament ?
Iliac tuberosity
What is the insertion of the posterior (dorsal) interosseous sacroiliac ligament ?
Posterior surface of the sacrum
What does the posterior (dorsal) interosseous sacroiliac ligament prevent?
- forward and downward dislocation of the sacrum from the ilia
- sacral nutation
What is sacral nutation ?
Rotation in the sagittal plane that moves the top forward and the coccyx backwards
What does the long posterior sacroiliac ligament prevent?
Extreme counternutation
What is the origin of the ilio-lumbar ligament ?
Iliac crest
What is the insertion of the ilio-lumbar ligament ?
Transverse process of the 5th lumbar vertebrae
What movements does the ilio-lumbar ligament prevent?
Forward dislocation (glide) of L5 on the downward-soloing upper surface of the sacrum
What is the origin of the sacrotuberous ligament?
The lateral sacrum
What is the insertion of the sacrotuberous ligament ?
Ischial tuberosity
What movement does the sacrotuberous ligament prevent?
Sacral nutation
What is the origin of the Inguinal ligament ?
Anterior Superior Iliac Spine
Where does the Inguinal ligament insert?
Pubic tubercle
Does the Inguinal ligaments prevent any movement ?
No - since it doesn’t cross any joints as it connects two pavers of the same bone (the hip bone), it cannot limit any joint movement
What does the Inguinal ligament serve as?
- serves as an attachment for abdominal wall muscles
- protect important structures that pass beneath it (such as the femoral vessels and nerve)
