Wet Lab 11 - Abdomen And Pelvis Flashcards
What are the abdomen and pelvis
They are continuous regions where nothing divides the two
What is the abdominopelvic cavity
A single entity
What is the true pelvis
Has a boundary at its superior bony surface which is the pelvic inlet, the bony border is the pelvic brim
What structures cross the pelvic brim that travel between the false and true pelvis
- NO MUSCLES
- full urinary bladder
- sigmoid colon
- internal sexual organs
- ureters
- internal iliac vessels
- lumbosacral trunk
- baby before and during childbirth
The size of the female pelvic inlet
A normal female pelvic inlet is wider/sideways than it is in dimensions front to back
The size of the pelvic outlet
It is normally longer front to back than sideways
Pelvis and baby’s head during child birth
During childbirth, the baby’s head is the largest part and is normally longer front to back than sideways
What occurs during a non-caesarean childbirth
A process whereby the baby’s head starts off in the abdominal cavity, down to the false pelvis where it has been growing and developing
- it then passes through the pelvic inlet sideways, turns 90 degrees to face backwards inside the true pelvic
- it then exits the pelvic outlet facing backwards
