They interviewed a lot of women that most likely were sexually abused. Many of them could not remember being abused.
What were some critiques of Williams’ study on repressed memories?
- Unwillingness to report childhood sexual trauma to an unfamiliar interviewer does not mean that the trauma forgotten.
- Some of the abuse took place when the women were as young as 10 months of age, and everyone agrees that “infantile amnesia” is real.
- Some of the abuse was such that the child might not have recognized it as such.
What is the theory behind uncovering repressed memories?
- Certain memories are too painful to bear, so you might repress them.
- Repressed memories cause psychological disorders.

- Take 3 photos of different events, they modify one of them so that they’re in a hot air balloon.
- Ask family member to recall details of the event.
- Researcher uses guided imagery.
What were the results in Wade’s false memory test with the balloon ride?
On the last interview, they recalled more false memories about the hot air balloon, even though it never happened.
