Week 3 - Thursday - Lecture 6 Flashcards
What did Scoville remove from HM’s brain?
Parts of HM’s medial temporal lobe on both sides of the brain.
What part of the brain in the medial temporal lobe is crucial for memories?
The hippocampus.
For HM, memory for the weeks and years preceding the surgery was ________
Mostly intact.
What type of amnesia did HM have?
Anterograde amnesia.
What type of memories was HM no longer able to form?
Long-term declarative memories.
Did HM have trouble making memories before or after the lesion?
After.
Was HM’s short-term memory impaired?
No. It functioned properly.
What would patient EP say if you were to
ask him, “Can you copy down a drawing of that weird, complex figure I showed you 20 minutes ago?”
He wouldn’t remember doing the drawing, so he couldn’t reproduce it.
What was the first major revelation about memory and the brain from patient HM?
The hippocampus and other structures in the temporal lobe are critical for making new memories.
What are two important revelations that came from H.M.?
- Procedural memories were intact
- He also suffered from temporarily graded retrograde amnesia.
What are procedural memories?
Memories that you don’t remember through retrieval cue. They are memories in which you must do the task in order to see if you still have the ability.
