Week 5 - Tuesday Flashcards
What type of memory is affected by bilateral hippocampal lesions?
Declarative
In the rat maze test, what happened when they lesioned the rats?
They rats that learned more recently did worse.
Why do (lesioned) rats who recently learned the maze perform worse than those who learned the maze one month ago?
The hippocampus didn’t have time to consolidate the memory.
Which area of the brain is responsible for consolidation?
The hippocampus.
What is the end result of consolidation, in regards to the hippocampus?
The neurons that are associated with the memory become disconnected from the hippocampus.
How does anterograde amnesia relate to the hippocampus?
No new memories can be formed because the hippocampus is needed to form an initial record.
How does retrograde amnesia relate to the hippocampus?
Memories that are still undergoing the process of consolidation need the hippocampus too.
What happens in offline replay?
During sleep, the same cortical areas are being activated from before. This is the hippocampus consolidating.
How do we retrieve conscious / declarative memories?
Cues.
What visual disorder did Mr. I have?
Color-blind, after an accident.
What area of the brain could Mr. I not activate?
V4.
What kind of retrieval cue is necessary to access procedural memories?
Trick question. You need to do the task.
What kind of retrieval cue is necessary to access procedural memories?
Trick question. You need to do the task. You don’t need cues.
What happens in delay conditioning?
The air puff and tone happen at the same time.
What happens in trace conditioning?
The air puff happens AFTER the tone.
Amnesics are able to be classically conditioned the delay task, but not the trace conditioning task. What does this imply about the trace conditioning task?
It does require the hippocampus.
What is habituation?
Becoming used to an annoying sound, like a dog barking.
