Define the DAs Role in Nutrition Education
The registered Dental Assistant plays a role in educating and counselling
patients on basic nutritional requirements, especially with regards to dental caries prevention.
What is Quackery?
A dishonest claim to have special knowledge and skill in some field, typically medicine.

Transtheoretical Model - 6 Stages
Pre-Contemplation - patient not intending to take action in the future
Contemplation - patient intends to change in the next 6 months
Preparation - patient intends to take action in immediate future
Action - patient made modification to life style within the past 6 months
Maintenance - patient working to prevent relapse
Termination or Relapse - patient has no temptation and 100% self-efficacy
Why is it beneficial to know the 6 stages of change?
- Helps determine and guide client motivation
- Shows how readiness to change evolves through a series of phases
- Oral health care providers need to understand these stages to deal effectively with clients
Effective Education & Counselling Techniques
Problem Solving:
-Listen to what concerns the patient the most
-It may not be dentally related
Patient must be actively involved:
-Be future orientated, not focused on past failures
-Patients have more success if they accept their own solutions
Make the solutions applicable to the patient’s lifestyle and habits:
-Make small goals so that they can build on their successes
How to Assist with Behaviour Change
Establish - Always establish your patients trust first - be authentic and empathetic
Determine - deterimine necessary chage
Provide - Provide Encouragement/show concern
Offer - Offer suggestions, tips, tricks refer to sources
Chart - chart all conversations you have with your patient
