Vitamin B Deficiency
- Eggs, Salmon, Avocado, Leafy Greens
A patient completes his medical history and states that his doctor found that he is anemic. He then tells you that he is also nervous and tired. Given this specific feedback from this patient, what is the primary nutrient(s) that you think he is lacking? Is he deficient in a nutrient or has he possibly ingested a toxic level of nutrient? What type of foods could your dental team suggest that he increase in his diet?
Patient could have iron, vitamin B12 or folate deficiency
Suggest to eat iron rich foods such as meats, poultry, fish, beans, lentils, nuts & seeds
A patient, 17 years old, complains to you that she is very unhappy with the appearance of her teeth, they appear to have white, chalky-like patches on the maxillary anterior teeth. What is the primary nutrient(s) that you think she is lacking? Is she deficient in a nutrient or has she possibly ingested a toxic level of nutrient? What type of foods or oral hygiene instructions could your dental team suggest to her?
Patient may have flurosis - caused by ingesting too much fluoride during foramative years
Patient should not use oral hygiene products containing fluoride.
Could also have a calcium deficiency. Patient should eat foods like milk, cheese, yogurt, kale, salmon
An 18-year-old patient had her wisdom teeth taken out. She returns to have a post-operative check at the office 10 days post-surgery. When you help complete her oral exam, you are asked to document that there is still a lot of swelling and some minor bleeding present in all four extraction sites, and the wounds are healing slowly. What is the primary nutrient(s) that you think she is lacking? Is she deficient in a nutrient or has she possibly ingested a toxic level of nutrient? What type of foods could your dental team suggest that he increase?
Patient may be deficient in Vitamin A, D and Zinc.
Patient should increase eating..
Vitamin A - eggs, milk, fish, cheese, dark green veggies
Vitamin D - oily fish, mushrooms, red meat & liver
Zinc - red meat, fish, poultry
