Week 7-Nervous system/Special senses Flashcards
Acetylcholine
Neurotransmitter chemical released at the ends of nerve cells
Afferent nerve
Carries messages toward the brain and spinal cord (sensory nerve)
Arachnoid membrane
Middle layer of the three membranes (meninges) that surround the brain and spinal cord
Axon
Microscopic fiber that carries the nervous impulse along a nerve cell
Brainstem
Posterior portion of the brain that connects cerebrum with spinal cord; includes pons, medulla oblongata
Cauda equina
Collection of spinal nerves below the end of spinal cord
Cerebellum
Posterior part of brain that coordinates muscles movements and maintains balance
Cerebral cortex
Outer region of the cerebrum, containing sheets of nerve cells; gray matter
Cerebrospinal fluid
CSF; circulates throughout brain and spinal cord
Cranial nerves
12 pairs of nerves that carry messages to and from the brain with regard to head and neck (except vagus nerve)
Dendrite
Microscopic branching fiber of a nerve cell that is the first part to receive nervous impulse
Dura mater
Thick, outermost layer of meninges surrounding and protecting brain and spinal cord; hard mother
Ganglion
Collection of nerve cell bodies in PNS
Glial cell
Neuroglial cell; supportive and connective nerve cell that does not carry nervous impulses; reproduce themselves
Hypothalamus
Portion of brain beneath thalamus; controls sleep, appetite, body temp, secretions from pituitary gland
Medulla oblongata
part of brain just above spinal cord; controls breathing, heartbeat, size of blood vessels; nerve fiber cross over here
Meninges
3 protective membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord
Motor nerve
Carries messages away from brain and spinal cord to muscles and organs; efferent nerve
Migraine
Severe, recurring, unilateral, vascular headache
Myelin sheath
Covering of white fatty tissue that surround and insulates the axon of a nerve cell
Neuron
Nerve cell that carries impulses throughout the body; parenchyma of the nervous system
Neurotransmitter
Chemical messenger released at the end of a nerve cell; stimulates or inhibits another cell
Parasympathetic nerves
The part of the involuntary nervous system that serves to slow the heart rate, increase intestinal and glandular activity, and relax the sphincter muscles. The parasympathetic nervous system, together with the sympathetic nervous system, constitutes the autonomic nervous system.
Pons
Part of the brain anterior to the cerebellum and between the medulla and the rest of the midbrain
Accommodation
Normal adjustment of the eye to focus on objects from far to near
Anterior chamber
Area behind the cornea, in front of lens and iris; contains aqueous humor
Aqueous humour
Fluid produced by the ciliary body and found in the anterior chamber
Choroid
Middle, vascular layer of the eye, between the retina and sclera
Ciliary body
Structure surrounding the lens that connects the choroid and iris; contains ciliary muscles
Cone
Photoreceptor cell in the retina that transforms light energy into a nerve impulse; responsible for color and central vision
Conjunctiva
Delicate membrane lining the undersurface of the eyelids and covering the anterior eyeball
Cornea
Fibrous transparent layer of clear tissue that extends over the anterior portion of the eyeball
Fovea centralis
Tiny pit or depression in the retina that is the region of clearest vision
Iris
Pigmented (colored) layer that opens and closes to allow more or less light into the eye; central opening of the iris is the pupil
Lens
Transparent biconvex body behind the pupil of the eye; bends (refracts) light rays to bring them into focus on the retina
Retina
Light sensitive nerve cell layer of the eye containing photoreceptor cells (rods and cones)
Cerumen
Ear wax; waxy substance secreted by the external ear
Cochlea
Snail shell-shaped, spirally wound tube in the inner ear; contains hearing-sensitive receptor cells
Auricle
Flap of the ear; pinna; protruding part of external ear
Incus
Second ossicle (bone) of the middle ear; Anvil
Malleus
First ossicle of the middle ear; Hammer
Oval window
Membrane between the middle and inner ear
Stapes
Third ossicle of the middle ear; Stirrup
Tympanic membrane
Membrane between the outer and middle ear; Eardrum
Vestibule
Central cavity of the labyrinth, connecting semicircular canals and cochlea; contains saccule and utricle; helps maintain equilibrium
Auditory canal
Channel that leads from the pinna to the eardrum
Eustachian tube
Auditory tube
Endolymph
Fluid within the labyrinth of inner ear
Peripheral nervous system
Contains a large group of nerves that function involuntary
Optic nerve
Cranial nerve II; paired nerve that transmits visual info from retina to brain
