Define care
Attending to the physical, psychological and social needs of an individual, the obligation of someone to prevent harm or distress occurring to another
What are the core conditions?
Empathy, congruence, unconditional positive regard
What are the 8 aspects of care?
- encouraging manner
- attentive reassurance
- human respect
- healing environment
- appreciation of unique meanings
- mutual problem solving
- affiliation needs
- attending to basic human needs
What are the 6C’s?
Care, compassion, competence, communication, courage, commitment
What is care?
Care is our core business and that of our organisations
What is compassion?
Compassion is how care is given through relationships based on empathy, respect and dignity
What is competence?
Competence means all those in caring roles must have the ability to understand an individual’s health and social needs
What is communication?
Communication is central to successful caring relationships and to effective team work
What is courage?
Courage enables us to do the right thing for people we care for, to speak up when we have concerns
What is commitment?
A commitment to our patients and populations is a cornerstone of what we do. We need to build on our commitment to improve the care and experience of our patients
What are the eight dignity factors?
- choice and control
- communication
- eating and nutritional care
- pain management
- personal hygiene
- privacy
- social inclusion
