What is self awareness?
Self awareness and regulation are non-technical skills where an individual becomes are or personal and others emotions and then modulated those emotions to effectively act during a challenging situation
What does self awareness consist of?
- complex and positive skills
- understanding our own values and beliefs that form us as individuals
- requires self acknowledgements
Why is self awareness important?
We need to respect ourselves before we can respect the dignity of others, be aware of the impact of ourselves on others, as well as taking into account beliefs and values of others
What are the three basic human relationship needs?
- to be valued
- the need to be in control
- the need for affection and affirmation
What are the four areas in the Mohair Window Model?
Open area , blind area, hidden area, unknown area
What is the open area?
Known to self and others
What is the blind area?
Known to others and not by self (ask for feedback to increase self awareness)
What is the hidden area?
Known to self but not by others
What is the unknown area?
Unknown by self and others
What are the two types of defensive mechanisms?
Primitive and higher level
What are some primitive defence mechanisms?
- acting out
- avoidance
- denial
- projecting
What are some higher level mechanisms?
- anticipation
- compensation
- displacement
- humour
- isolation of affect
- rationalisation
