Define learning disabiltity
A significant lifelong difficulty in learning and understanding, a significant difficulty in learning and processing the skills needed to cope with everyday life, with evidence that these difficulties starter before 18 years of age
What are causes of learning disabilities?
- pre-conceptual, pre/peri/post-natal
- maternal factors
- environmental factors
- genetic disorders
- chromosomal disorders
Is autism a learning disability?
No, but 1/3ppl with autism have a learning disabilities
What may people with autism struggle with?
- social communication
- social imagination and flexibility of thought
- social interaction
- restricted or repetitive patterns of behaviour
- restricted, repetitive interests or activities
- unusual sensory responses
What are some different types of communication?
- body language
- photos
- singing
- objects
- symbols
- eye contact/face expression/touch
What is an object of reference?
Objects that are used to communicate a meaning in the same way as words and pictures
What are sensory references?
Similar to objects of references, but use sounds, lights smell and taste.
What is Makaton?
An approach to teaching communication, language and literacy using combined modes of communication, with speech, sign, facial expressions and symbols
What is a talking mat?
A low tech communication framework that is designed ti assist people with communication difficulties to express feelings, choices, or drive at decisions
What is a picture exchange communication system?
PECS is a picture-symbol-based approach. It teaches communication by exchanging a picture symbol for something they want
What is a hospital passport?
A hospital passport is a simple and practical guide to understanding and supporting a persons communication, containing key information e.g. likes and dislikes
What is a talkabout book?
A book of photos and paper reminders to record events and achievements, activities or things that are of interest to its owner.
What is a visual timetable?
A timetable or planner that uses photos, pictures, symbols or objects placed in a sequence to represent daily activities
What is a social story?
A social story is a short story written in a specific style and format, the story describes what happens in a specific social situation to help improve their understanding of social situations
What are some examples of barriers towards healthcare?
- lack of accessible transport links
- patient not being indentified as having a learning disability
- anxiety or a lack of confidence for people with a learning disability
- not enough involvement allowed from carers
- inadequate aftercare of follow -up-care
