What is resilience?
The ability to overcome adversity and grow stronger from the experience
What are some paramedic demands?
- long/antisocial hours
- emotional investment
- physical fatigue

Define compassion fatigue
The physical, emotional and spiritual exhaustion resulting from caring for patients and witnessing pain and suffering
Define burn out
The progressive development, feelings of exhaustion, cynicism and hopelessness due to work load demands
What is the theory of the wounded healer?
That someone who has been ill will provide better care as they have been in the patients shoes
What are signs of burnout/struggling?
- headaches
- feeling negative
- irritable
- being physically ill
- insomnia
- anxiety
- neglecting selfcare
- feeling numb/apathetic
What are the 3 needs?
Control, understanding and belonging
What are some ways to maintain resilience?
- keep things in perspective
- have a sense of humour
