Define empathy
The skill and ability to understand another person’s perspective
Define consent
A voluntary, uncoerced decision, made by a sufficiently competent or autonomous person on a basis of adequate information and deliberation
Define care
Attending to physical, psychological and social needs of an individual. An obligation of someone to prevent harm or distress occurring to another
Define empowerment
Patients gaining knowledge, skills, attitudes or self-awareness, combined with the confidence to participate in their care
Define dignity
The intrinsic, unconditional value of all persons
Define compassion
The recognition, understanding and emotional response to another’s distress, and a motivating factor to relieve that distress
Define respect
Our actions that honour or acknowledge a person’s dignity
Define a shared decision
Making leads to more patient satisfaction and better treatment adherence
Define communication
Communication involves the reciprocal process in which messages are sent and received between two or more people
What are the three human psychological needs?
Control, understanding and belonging
What is a perceptual lense?
Perceptual lense refers to how an individual interprets their surroundings which can be shared from out past experiences
What does a shared perspective allow?
Communication between a shared perspective allows a perceptual lense to be understood and also forms empathetic communication
Why is a shared perspective important for paramedic practice?
This type of communication leads to safer clinical care and improved resilience and wellbeing
