Define communication
Communication involves the reciprocal process in which messages are sent and received between two or more people
What are the three models of communication?
The linear model, interactive model, and transactional model
How is a perspective formed?
Perspective is formed and influenced by factors of which someone is exposed to.
What are some factors that infants are exposed to that influence their perspective?
Care providers and home environment
What are some factors adolescents are exposed to that influence their perspective?
Teachers, religion, peers, hobbies
What are some factors adults are exposed to that influence their perspective?
Politics, relationships, music, technology, experiences, occupation, peers
What are the 5 different question styles?
Closed, open, probing, clarifying and leading
What question is the following-
‘Does your leg hurt?’
Closed (answer is yes/no)
What question is the following-
‘what symptoms have you experienced?’
Open (open to more flexible answers)
What question is the following-
‘so you said your leg hurts, how would you describe the pain?’
Probing
What question is the following-
‘you said your pain is a 8/10, is that correct?’
Clarifying
What question is the following-
‘you’ve been very brave haven’t you?’
Leading
What are the two types of interview styles?
Structured and unstructured
What are the pros to a structured interview?
- systematic process
- assists with information collection
- more professional
What are the cons to a structured interview?
- rigid and less flexible
- less personal/more robotic
- emphasizes power imbalance
