Week 3 - Osteogenesis Imperfecta Flashcards
what is osteogenesis colloqially known as?
brittle bone disease
what is osteogenesis imperfecta?
defect of the maturation and organisation of type 1 collagen (which accounts for most of the organic composition of bone)
how are most cases of osteogenesis imperfecta inherited?
autosomal dominant
what are the common features of osteogenesis imperfecta?
multiple fragility fractures in childhood
short stature with multiple deformities
blue sclerae
loss of hearing
how else can osteogenesis imperfecta be inherited and how does this present?
autosomal recessive
either fatal in perinatal period or associated with spinal deformity
why can osteogenesis imperfecta sometimes be misdiagnosed?
the multiple fractures can be mistaken for child abuse/Non-accidental injury
describe the bones in osteogenesis imperfecta?
tend to be thin (gracile) with thin cortices and osteopenic
mild cases have normal X rays
what else can cause a non-inherited osteogenesis imperfecta?
prematurity
can result in low energy fractures
how is osteogenesis imperfecta treated?
fractures tend to heal with abundant but bad quality callus and are therefore treated with splintage or surgical stabilization
what is a possible complication of osteogenesis imperfecta?
some cases can develop deformity which require multiple osteotomies and intramedullary stabilization
