what is OA?
A
primary degenerative disorder
extreme of normal wear and tear which occurs in joint over time

is OA inflammatory?
A
not primarily but there can be associated inflammation which can cause periodic flares

what happens in OA?
A
imbalance between wearing and repairing of joints

what can cause OA?
A
no direct cause but some things can increase risk
- hobbies and type of work (manual)
- abnormal alignment
- may be a familial link

what can give rise to secondary OA?
A
previous injuries
- articular cartilage
- intra articular
- extra- articular with subsequent malalignment
- meniscal

what is seen in an X ray of OA?
A
LOSS Loss of joint space Osteophytes Subchondral cysts Sclerosis

Do X ray findings and symptoms always correlate?
A
no
can have severe symptoms and mild disease on imaging or no symptoms and severe disease on imaging

how is OA treated?
A
mainly pain control - analgesia and mild opiates physiotherapy weight loss exercise surgery (joint replacement) if needed
