Week 3 Day 2 Stress Flashcards
What are the two parts of the Adrenal gland? Where is it located in the body?
Adrenal cortex (outer area) and Adrenal medulla (middle) -located right above the kidney.
What releases corticosteroids? And what are the 3 subcategories of corticosteroids?
Adrenal glands
- mineralocorticoids: regulate minerals (water and salt balance)
- glucocorticoids: regulates glucose levels in blood
- gonadocorticoids: regulates gonadal hormones
In summary: Salt, sugar, and sex
What does Epinephrine do?
Shifts blood flow
When we vasodilate, what receptor does Epinephrine bind to? Where does the blood flow shift to?
Epinephrine binds to beta receptors
-skeletal muscles
When we vasoconstrict, what does type of receptor does epinephrine bind to?
Alpha
When we’re stressed, what receptor does epinephrine bind to to make us breath easier?
Epinephrine binds to beta receptors to help us breath easier
Does the sympathetic nervous system use epinephrine or norepinephrine?
Norepinephrine
Does the parasympathetic system use epinephrine or norepinephrine?
Epinephrine
How does Cortisol affect our glucose metabolism?
Breakdowns fat in adipose tissue and proteins in our bones/skeletal muscles
What does cortisol bind to?
Glucocorticoid receptors
How does cortisol affect our immune system?
Our immune system is suppressed by cortisol
In respect to the Circadian rhythm, when do we have our highest level of cortisol?
when we wake up/in the morning
What is the cause of Addison’s disease?
Low cortisol levels
What are gametes?
Cells that fuse with other cells to produce embryo
What is gametogensis?
Gametogensis is the making of gametes
