Week 2 - A - Phosphates in kidney failure Flashcards
What is the percentage increase in depression in end stage renal disease?
25-30% increase in depression
Why is there a need for diet control in ESRD? (end stage renal disease)
To prevent the overflow of certain substances eg phosphate, salt, potassium
What effect can excess potassium have on the heart?
Can cause arrythmias - decreases heart rate
What can excess salt cause?
Can cause hypertension
What can excess phosphate cause?
Can lead to hypocalcaemia causing increased bone resorption to get more calcium and this makes the bone weak
Why is chocolate restricted in chronic kindey disease?
In chronic kidney disease the kidney already struggles to excrete phosphorus and chocolate is high in phosphorus so should therefore be limited
When patients are on dialysis, the hope that they will no longer need this is for a kidney transplant
What is the risk factors of some of the drugs after having dialysis?
Infections
Haemorrhage
GI Upset
Immunosuppression
