McAdams Life Story Model of Identity

From article.

A
  1. The person defines herself by constructing an autobiographical story of the self. Connecting many stories togethor.
Note: narcissistic endeavours, McAdams, would say natural organization of us and others.
  2. The story provides the person with a sense of unity and purpose in life. complex enough to explain evolution of self, happy miserable happy for k. Eg. Me progression troubles health, school success, actualization?.
  3. Facts are not as important as the meaning.
In other words, we shape our stories, spinning ads,
Baldwin, spelling bee, really brothers story, but incorporated it,
    k focus on troubles troubles.
    - note McAdams preemie birth; 50/50 chance of survival
Cautious and grateful, hmm sounds familiar. Not sure where he got this from though,
  • example of Roland as the big
strong brother; sister brother figure prominently, story about wife meeting brother, focus on 10 year old boy impression. Self fulfilling prophecy. Then mom story, hitler youth brigade, run home, are they really tue, well there is a reconstructive process. So not always. When kids parents tell us lots of storie, incorporating them.

**Seems ability parents have to put togethor life story influence how well you construct your life story.

  1. The process begins actively in young adulthood but important aspects of the life story are derived from earlier developmental periods. : most changeable part of personalsty, flexible.
  2. The process continues throughout one’s adult life.
    1. The story should become more finely nuanced as one grows older .
    1. There should be some adaptive benefit to a well-crafted life story. Process has meaning, affects well being and rela. Benefits to well crafted story.

Note child can only tell single story, getting older, better able to tell good story,

Q

The life story method,

A

7/8 chapters.
12-13, need same sex friend, hmm Darwyn, cool.
•Finding Friends Victor & Freddy; 12-13
•Rejects High School
; 15-18
•Columbia U: The Depths of Despair**; 19-20

Turning points in life is another way, monies, high low point,
Important child or adult episodes, biggest challenges, min characters, ask about future.

Mean implied future in our stories too.
All can do this, surprising ability.

Do this like a movie or film, judge them same way, descriptive language applies to person slide soptroy too.

Q

It is challenging to develop a good life story.

A

• coherence
Causal, temporal,
• openness, unpredictable, suprises,
• **credibility: should be some factual accuracy. Imp. Anchored in reality, though narcissists problem ly have a lot less of this.
Ex. Party in Rochester, English major,
• differentiation: complex and detailed, old der more nuanced. Gives everyone personal story arc, characters are 3d
• reconciliation
• generative integration: helpful to others in creating these stories, unsefula Nd incorporated by others

Developmental progression: stores become more, coherent and differentiated with time,

Questions that you might have:

A
  1. What if one isn’t a story-teller? No such thing
  2. Is it quantifiable? Yup. Interview scored for themes, reliable, endless process though, shows score works, track them and predict.
  3. Can it predict anything? Yeah
  4. How would psychotherapy influence it? Go to counselling cuz story is not working to well, self disclose, help of counsellor, revise story, thinking differently. Collaborative revision, co-authored.
  5. How much can the story change in adulthood? A lot.

Research on life story not too compelling yet though, but has a lot of value.

Perfectionist

A

Healthy, not manic about it, self strem does not depend on it.

Unhealthy, achievement depends on self esteem,
Killer instinct. Focus on winning. Sex and sports life achievement so high in both, compulsive Suggs. Cannot slept since 19. Indicates, something is not right.
Recovered, in swb. Eudaimonic ally, k is concerned. Purpose, hmm.

Bruce from 49 up

A

What about his happiness?
Low e and n.
What about swb and eeb, any change over time, good or bad.

Never asserted himself, realizing anger and feelings. Case of low eu, but.

Low social dominance,
Perhaps high eu, though, just low hedonic.

Q

Distinguishing to forms of well being.

A

Distinguishing the two forms
●High positive correlations between hedonic and eudaimonic measures;

Regrets, Happiness & Maturity: The Role of Lost Possible Selves,King 2007

A

●Adults with major life changes
–Having a child with downs syndrome
–Divorcing after 20 years of marriage;
●Measured salience & elaboration of lost possible selves.
●Measured happiness & eudaimonic wb;
●Key findings:
Are they processing events, what does it mean that…? Explore lost.
Detailed elaborate, lots of work, some ppl, other not.
Avoid it, swb will stay higher, by not focusing on it, but at acost!
Follow up, ppl who process it, swb, returns, and eudaimonic well being is much higher. Short term, hedonic, up but limited eudaimonic well being.

21
Q

Hedonic, swb.

There does seem to be a set point, amazing how we recover or go back down! Lottery ex.

A

Wealth and Happiness:
●Ppl in richer countries > ppl in poorer countries;
●Incr in national wealth of developing countries does not lead to increase swb;
●Within a nation, there are only small pos r’s between Income & happiness;
●Increases in personal wealth typically do not result in increase happiness;

22
Q

Two Established Paradoxes swb

A

●The paradox of age
Hedonic well being dismisses until about 46 and then back up -

●Recent findings support the
U-Bend

Age 46 seems to be the low point.
Stress high for students.
30’s more worry, 40 more sadness, anger down throughout adulthood.

23
Q

The end!

A

Yay!

31
Q

Forms of well being

A

99% ppl think about if they are happy.
Two forms of well being, which can but don’t lays diverge,
Happy healthy

32
Q

Two Types of Well-being

A

●Hedonic
Positive negative valence add all of the pieces up
–Happiness
–Subjective well-being

Standard way to assess it, related it to traits, and motives.

But…

●Eudaimonic
Eu means well, daimonic, means soul
–To live in accord with your “daemon” your soul
–Psychological well being

Sometimes the two are different, can lead a meaningful purpose life, high hedonic, but low eudaimonic , so poor psychological well being.

–INTERVIEW WITH TIGER 2006

33
Q

Measurement of hedonic well being

A

Subjective well being, (happiness) 3 parts cognitive assesment self report,
Life satisfaction,
High positive affect
Low negative affect

Note affect measured seperate duly, to accumulate affects, they are orthogonL, independant from one another.

Reliable, widely use and NORMALLY DISTRIBUTED

Personality I variables predict affect
-ve affet related to N, but not pos aff
E social dominance predicts pos aff, not less neg aff

Collectively good indicator,
If others ask about you, think the same about you, self other agreement. R = .6
Note swb highly stable over time. Rank order r = .6-.7
Also it is largely genetic, me dz, shown to be 50% heritable! likely due to e and n

It also seems to have a set point, so it will change but for a limited time, unless major event happens.. Like in social PSYC.

34
Q

Eudaimonic Eb scales?

A

Purpose, meaning, self acutalizing measured
Psychological well being, as opposed to swb

When am thing predicts these two wb different outcomes?

35
Q

Tiger woods

A

High swb, open answer to I hard questions,
Then spiral down, not won since then .
Sad narcissist, “let the legend grow”
very controlled. Common for famous ppl to be promiscuous, especially males of high power.
Presented kind reasonable image, but must have been lying.
